Gianluca Olcese

PhD student at the Institute of Classical, Mediterranean and Oriental Studies at University of Wrocław, recommended by prof. dr hab. Gościwit Malinowski - at PhD level.

- Despite the fact that he’s learning Polish only since 2008 he resigned from the possibility of applying for doctoral studies in his native language - the words of prof. Gościwit Malinowski said about Gianluca Olcese best characterize an ambitious PhD student at the University of Wroclaw.

Gianluca’s Olcese road, which led him to doctoral studies at the Institute of Classical, Mediterranean and Oriental Studies at University of Wrocław was tortuous. After graduating masters degree he worked in his country as a teacher of Italian language. But he was interested in the "north", so in the same time he applied for the best universities. First went to the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. While he was working there he met many Polish scientists, including those of the Wroclaw University. One of them was prof. Malinowski, who asked him to write his doctorate under his supervision.

His motto is to build a strong scientific relations between Italy and Poland. And he manages to do it in one hundred percent. He helped to create an Italian course in his Institute. He also teaches Italian. Both students and colleagues love it. - He is very open, interested in the world, full of sense of humour, which makes conversation with him in Polish a lot of fun - says prof. Malinowski.

Gianluca believes that scientific work is the most important contact with other people - I think that reading books is very much needed, but you can not just sit in libraries, you must also talk to other people, be open and gain different experiences. Looking at reality from different points of view gives the possibility of better understanding it.
