PhD studies in Astronomy at the Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University last 4 years, enough time to develop your skills and elaborate your own original scientific PhD project. We offer a wide range of research fields in which to prepare a thesis, including many branches of observational astronomy, various fields involving numerical modelling, and finally purely theoretical work. The main topics include radio-astronomical studies of both nearby galaxies and large extragalactic radiosources, optical astronomy (binary systems, accretion disks, spectroscopy), high energy astrophysics (observations and theoretical modelling in X- ray and gamma ray spectral ranges), observational and theoretical cosmology, solar activity and space weather, numerical MHD and Monte Carlo simulations. In your research you can take advantage of a number of world-class instruments with which our institute is directly involved, such as the large optical telescope SALT, the TeV gamma ray observatory H.E.S.S. (and future CTA), and the low frequency radio observatory LOFAR. Our staff members have observational proposals at satellite observatories Chandra and XMM in X-rays, Herschel in infrared, and Hubble in optical, among others, and at leading radio astronomical observatories, among them the 100m telescope in Effelsberg, interferometers VLA and GMRT. For numerical modelling you will have at your disposal the most powerful computational centres in Poland and Europe. Research is often done in international collaboration. Our PhDs generally find post-docs in prestigious scientific institutions in Europe and the USA. Candidates must have obtained a Master’s Degree in Physics or Astronomy, or in exceptional cases in Computer Science, Mathematics or Geophysics. Your work will beresearch rather than learning-oriented, with only a limited amount of lectures, seminars, and undergraduate teaching. PhD students can be supervised by any staff member on our faculty, including the Astronomical Observatory and the Institute of Physics. Students will receive a fellowship sufficient to cover living expenses in Cracow.
